In loving Memory of Kelvin, The Reader Dog

Kelvin began his dog/child/literacy program at the Southwest Harbor Public Library on Mount Desert Island, Maine in February 2004, retiring 5 years later on Valentine’s Day, 2009. Over the years, Kelvin read one-on-one with over 85 children during some 900, 20 minute sessions at the library, helping them gain confidence in and fostering a love of reading. As a spokes dog for Reader Dog Downeast, Kelvin visited classrooms, had a booth at dog events and was even featured at a Central Maine Library District annual meeting. PDF made a generous grant to Kelvin’s program to buy hard cover books for him to gift to his Reader Kids.

After a yearlong battle with a cancerous tumor on the back of his head, Kelvin made a graceful exit from life after a final week of climbing mountains, hiking along the shore, watching sunsets and connecting with close canine and human friends. His tribute follows, offered with love by his human mom, MJ Penn and Chessie brother, Cody.
